Research summary
Key objectives of the research are (1) To establish the impact of screening on detection and mortality from ovarian cancer through large multicentre randomized controlled trials in the general (UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening UKCTOCS) and high+risk population (UK Familial Ovarian Cancer UKFOCSS). (2) To discover and validate new biomarkers in ovarian and breast cancer using samples and data collected through a multicentre UK Ovarian Cancer Population Study (UKOPS) and using the large biobanks associated with the screening trials. Both in house studies in collaboration with the proteomics and epigenetics groups and national and international collaborations are underway involving a variety of technologies (3) To enable earlier diagnosis of ovarian cancer through better understanding of disease symptoms + Three PhD projects are underway in this area involving a nested case control study using data from the GP Research Database, questionnaire, telephone interviews and GP notes review of symptoms in women with newly diagnosed with ovarian cancer in UKOPS and a prospective study of ovarian cancer symptoms in the UKCTOCS cohort. (4) To improve risk prediction by exploring the role of systematic screening for known gene mutations in high risk populations (Genetic Counseling and Population Prediction and Screening GCaPPS) and through collaborations with the genetics and epigenetics groups to identify single nucleotide gene polymorphisms and epigenetic markers and gene/epigenetic environment interactions that increase risk of breast and ovarian cancer in the general population using UKOPS and UKCTOCS women. (5) To implement the latest research findings in the clinical management of women at increased risk of familial gynaecological cancer
