UCL receives significant gift to advance women’s health
14 February 2025
Professor Seang Lin Tan and Dr Grace Tan award significant endowment to fund a Chair of Women’s Health at the UCL Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Institute for Women’s Health.

The gift will establish The Professor Seang Lin Tan, Dr Grace Tan and Originelle Fertility distinguished Chair in Women’s Health, a role that will be held by Anna David, Professor in Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine and Director at the Institute for Women’s Health.
The endowment will support women’s health education and research at UCL by helping drive forward advancements in areas such as reproductive health, maternal care and gender disparities in healthcare.
“By supporting our work at the Institute, Professor and Dr Tan are supporting the health of future generations,” said Professor David. “Thanks to them, we can make a tangible difference to the health of women, babies and their families in the UK and internationally. It will ensure that UCL continues to be a world-leader in clinical practise, research, education and training in women’s health.”
The Institute is internationally recognised for its comprehensive ‘Life-Course’ approach to women's health issues. This involves examining the issues women face from infancy to childhood, puberty to pregnancy and motherhood, maturity to menopause and old age, and everything in between. This has driven much-needed progress: from shaping national and international sexual health policy to performing the first spina bifida surgeries on babies in the womb in the UK.
“My wife and I are honoured to partner with the UCL Institute for Women’s Health,” said Professor Tan. “Their focus on improving women’s health resonates profoundly with our own mission at the OriginElle Fertility Clinic. With its unique approach and seamless integration of clinicians and research groups, the Institute is truly capable of altering the landscape of women’s health.”
Professor Tan is a globally respected figure in reproductive medicine with world-leading expertise in infertility and in vitro fertilisation (IVF). With a distinguished career spanning over four decades, he has been instrumental in developing and rolling out several innovative methods in reproductive medicine. His work has significantly improved fertility treatments and outcomes, helping countless families worldwide.
“It is heartening to be supported by donors with such a long-standing commitment to furthering women’s health and international renown in their field,” said Mr Stuart Lavery, Divisional Clinical Director for Women’s Health at UCLH. “Gifts like this help deepen the long-standing collaborative relationship between the Institute and UCLH and ensure we can give patients access to the most advanced care available. I look forward to continuing working with Professor David and I have no doubt she will carefully foster the culture of excellence, innovation and collaboration that defines UCL and UCLH.”
“The support of Professor and Dr Tan underscores the crucial importance of UCL’s work in this field, and our capacity to improve women’s health outcomes all over the world,” said Angharad Milenkovic, Vice-President Advancement at UCL. “This gift will propel us toward a future where women’s health is prioritised, understood, and transformed. We are deeply grateful to Professor Tan and Dr Tan.”
