Legal abortion has been available in the UK since the 1967 Abortion Act. However, many people are unaware that inducing an abortion is still a criminal offence under the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act and both women and doctors can be imprisoned for life for procuring an abortion if the conditions of the 1967 Act are not met – the harshest criminal sanction in Europe. This lecture will clearly and concisely explain UK abortion law and outline the reasons medical organisations are calling for abortion to be decriminalised as well as examine arguments against decriminalisation.
