UCL Expand - Project Guidance

What is the UCL Expand project?

The project is your chance to showcase the knowledge and skills you’ve learned during the UCL Expand programme!

The project should take the form of an academic poster, although you can choose an alternative format if you wish. Please let the Expand team know if you would like to complete an alternative project type.

An academic poster is typically an A3 poster with a combination of text, images, tables, graphs and other presentation formats.

You will have freedom over the subject focus of your poster, although we encourage it to be linked to the topic you have learned about in online seminars.

The project will not be marked, but it is compulsory to submit a project to graduate from the programme.

FAQs

Where do I start?

We encourage you to be creative with your project ideas! The online seminars are a great starting point and an opportunity to find inspiration for your project. We recommend noting down any ideas or inspiration in your project planner as you go through the programme.

You may also be inspired by topics you've covered at school, but want to find out more about, or through your own research. You may also wish to tailor your project to suit your academic interests for univerisity.

We strongly encourage you to do your own research on the topic to exercise your independent learning skills. We will talk you through how to plan and prepare your project during online seminars 1 and 4, and will make sure all your questions are answered.

Where can I get support for my project?

We understand that an academic poster may be a new idea to you, so our Subject Experts, Student Ambassadors and UCL Expand Team are here to provide you with advice and guidance on what makes a great academic poster.

We have provided you with a project planner to help you plan and prepare for your project. We recommend using this throughout the programme to note down your ideas and plan ahead.

Halfway through the programme (Tuesday 3rd March), you will have an online session dedicated to your project planning and developing your project ideas. Here, you’ll be supported to come up with initial ideas for your project (if you haven't thought of ideas already!).

At the end of the online seminar series (Wednesday 18th March), we will have an optional project drop-in session. In this session, you can ask the UCL Expand team for guidance to help with completing your project.

We will also share previous project examples to help you get an idea of what your project could look like. Your Subject Expert will also provide example project titles as examples for topics you might like to investigate further.

Finally, you can always email the UCL Expand team at uclexpand@ucl.ac.uk or Whatsapp us at 07857630033 with any further questions about your project.

Where and how will I be able to present my project?

During the Graduation Event on Saturday 28th March, there will be a project presentation session, where you will present your project.

There will be large poster boards where your project will be displayed. Other UCL Expand participants will look at your project, ask questions about your work, and you'll have the opportunity to explain what you have found through your research. Multiple participants will be talking through their posters at the same time, so you won't be presenting in front of the whole UCL Expand cohort.

The presentation in this way is very informal and is nothing to worry about! It is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your communication skills that you developed in your final seminar, and is often participants' favourite part of the UCL Expand programme.

When and where do I submit my project?

The deadline to submit your project is midnight on Sunday 22nd March. You will need to upload your project via the form below by the deadline.

*Please note that the form only works if you have a Gmail account. If you do not have Gmail, please email your project to us at uclexpand@ucl.ac.uk and ensure you provide:

  • Your full name
  • Added your first name and initial of your last name to the poster
  • Attached your poster

If you are having any other issues with submitting your project, please email us at uclexpand@ucl.ac.uk.
