Professor Matthew Beaumont


Matthew Beaumont is Co-Director of the UCL Urban Laboratory and Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the UCL Department of English.

Matthew is the author of Utopia Ltd. (Haymarket, 2009), The Spectre of Utopia (Peter Lang, 2012), Nightwalking (Verso, 2015), and the co-author, with Terry Eagleton, of The Task of the Critic (Verso, 2009). He is the co-editor of Restless Cities (Verso, 2010).

Matthew's research interests currently centre on various aspects of the metropolitan city, especially at nighttime. His most recent book is Nightwalking: A Nocturnal History of London, the first installment of an attempt to reconstruct a cultural history of the urban subject at night, from the Middle Ages to the present, in order to present an alternative to the modernist myth of the flâneur.

Matthew was the founding director of the City Centre, which was set up in 2010 within the Department of English at UCL, an attempt to co-ordinate a range of different research projects on aspects of the cultural and literary history of the metropolis from the Middle Ages to the present. The centre has sinced merged with the Urban Lab to form the research and event activity strand Cities Imaginaries.

He has been Co-Director of the UCL Urban Laboratory since 2013.
