'Ethnographic Conceptualism' is an experimental methodological approach, which deploys conceptual art as an anthropological research tool.

This discussion event features the exhibitors (Michał Murawski, Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll, Nikolai Ssorin-Chaikov) joined by Jesse Weaver Shipley, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Haverford College, to explore the core proposition: that ethnographic conceptualism constitutes a methodological approach uniquely suitable for translating the 'holistic' gaze of anthropology to large-scale urban settings.

This event requires no prior booking.

Michał Murawski is an anthropologist of architecture, who has worked on projects at the intersection of contemporary art, ethnography and academia in Warsaw, London and Moscow. He is currently conducting research on Moscow's relationship to its Stalinist urban legacy as Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies, University College London.

Khadija von Zinnenburg Carroll's art-research practice grows out of a PhD written in Art and Architectural history at Harvard University and a conceptual installation
art degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She is currently a Fellow at the Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Nikolai Ssorin-Chaikov is Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. His research interests include anthropology of the state and governmentality, exchange theory, socialist modernity and post-socialism, and the legacies of the Cold War. He is author of The Social Life of the State in Sub-Arctic Siberia (Stanford University Press).
