How can we re-imagine London? How can we question the (invisible) taken-for-grantedness of our everyday life in the city, break our routines and experience London differently? As part of the week-long Cities Methodologies programme, Walking Methodologies aims to question how effectively we can use walking as a methodology for learning about the city.

On 1 May, you have the opportunity to become an urban researcher, being sent on a collective scavenger hunt into hidden and unexpected places of London. On this 'walkshop' you will carry out game-like exercises that will help you question your surroundings and think about them in new ways - reality is only one way of looking at it.

Meet at the Slade Research Centre at UCL. The walk is free and open to all, but places are limited. Please register via Eventbrite.

There are three other walks taking place as part of Walking Methodologies. There will also be an exhibition in the Slade Research Centre throughout the week and a roundtable discussion takes place on Friday 2 May.

The four walks preceding this roudtable are:

  1. A Silent Circle in King's Cross (Monday 28 April, 16:00-18:00)
  2. Money Walks: Profit, power and pedestrians in the City of London (Tuesday 29 April, 10:00-12:00)
  3. London's Lost Rivers - River Fleet (Wednesday 30 April, 18:00-20:00)
  4. Tracing Invisible Londons (Thursday 1 May, 18:00-20:30)

This 'walkshop' is organised by the social-artistic urban laboratory zURBS. zURBS poses alternatives to how we live together in our cities (=the social), through creative and imaginative processes (=the artistic). In this regard zURBS develops and organizes participatory research-projects on the perception of urban space using artistic methods, in form of walkshops, games, tours and other events. It is being led by Sabeth Tödtli, Nina Lund Westerdahl, and Cecilie Sachs Olsen.

Cities Methodologies is an ongoing programme of events and exhibitions dedicated to presenting, sharing and experimenting with new methods of urban research. You can see the other events lined up for the week here.
