This early film by astonishing director Bela Tarr bluntly observes the emotional turmoil of a family falling apart. The inability of the couple to resolve their troubled relationship is echoed by the monotonous cityscapes of prefab housing and the uniform furnishings of their tiny flat.
Like many East European films created during the late socialist years, Prefab People manifests the proverbial greyness of socialist daily life emptied of utopian political promises.
