Anna Mayr is a PhD candidate at the graduate school URBANgrad at the urban research center of TUDarmstadt. She started working on her dissertation on global city strategies in Johannesburg and Delhi after completing her masters studies in the trinational Global Studies Programme of Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, University of KwaZulu Natal (Durban, SA) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi, India). She currently coordinates an interdisciplinary study programme on technology and international development at TU Darmstadt.
Anna's research is on 'The global cities discourse inurban transformations – a comparative view on Johannesburg and Delhi'. This doctoral research project compares local visions of becoming a world-class city in Delhi and Johannesburg. By using discourse analysis it traces argumentative strategies taken up to use this vision as a catalyst in urban renewal. Although the concepts of global/world cities and the aim to create connected and competitive urban environments have spread all over the world; the case studies imply that despite of this diffusion, local articulations of world-class cities are shaped in specific ways. The world-class city discourses reflect actor coalitions and interests and provide an insight into the negotiation of the urban future in a post-colonial context.
Anna will be visiting the Urban Laboratory in March and will participate in this year's Stadtkolloquium on 26th and 27th March.
