Vivian Bickford-Smith is Leverhulme Visiting Professor in Comparative Metropolitan History at the Centre for Metropolitan History, Institute of Historical Research, for 2008-2009. He will be undertaking a programme of comparative research on projections and perceptions of Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, and in doing so he will assess the ways in which these cities were imagined and experienced as 'metropolitan' internally as well as in reference to cities elsewhere in the world, notably London.
