The myopia of long-term city visioning: locating poor people’s economic
activities in understandings of urban economic growth
Colin Marx, Lecturer, Human Geography, Kingston University
17.30pm, Rm 101, DPU – UCL
34 Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9EZ
Colin Marx works on urban informality and ways of rethinking urban economies
in the interests of poor and marginalised groups. He spent 10 years working
in urban advocacy NGOs in South Africa before turning to academia.
This presentation will explore how understandings of urban poor people’s
economic activities are represented within development discourses and what
some of the planning consequences of these understandings might be. The
long-term city visioning processes undertaken by the city of Durban, South
Africa provides a unique opportunity to evaluate this issue.
All are welcome to attend.
