4 days until UCU strike begins - check our FAQ

20 November 2019

Information for members about strike action at UCL from Monday 25th November

From Monday 25 November to Wednesday 4 December UCU members at UCL will be taking strike action alongside 80% of members in USS institutions. On the Four Fights dispute (pay, equality, casualisation and workload), more than 60% of members across the sector pre- and post-92 are being called out.

UCU has produced a list of strike action FAQs - please take a moment to check this before sending an email query to UCL UCU. Here’s one of the more common questions:

Q: Do I have to tell my employer I am going on strike or intend to take action short of a strike before the action begins?
A: No. You do not have to tell your employer whether you plan to take industrial action in advance of the date when action begins. Doing so will enable them to minimise any disruption the action is aimed to cause and therefore undermine the dispute. UCU has already provided your employer with all the information about the action required by law including those categories of members who we are calling on to take action.

Question 22 on the UCU FAQ considers: “what can I tell my students about the strike?”  We have also produced a sample letter and a leaflet for students that colleagues can use.

Each day of strike action is for a 24 hour period. Any events planned on a strike day that involve staff who are participating in strike action should be cancelled.

We will be sending more information about publicising our action to colleagues, and the organisation of picketing, over the next two days.

Thank you for supporting our action.
