USS Ballot and Action Update

26 January 2018

The results of the ballot have been published and nationally the turnout was 58% with 88% of members who voted, voting YES for strike action. UCL saw 90% voting for strike action and 95% for action short of a strike on a 57% turnout. This is the most solid vote for industrial action in a national dispute since the UCU's formation in 2006. The turnout is a 14% increase on the last USS ballot in 2014.

UCL is one of 61 universities due to take strike action next month after negotiations to reach agreement on the future of the USS pensions scheme between UCU and Universities UK (UUK) failed on 23rd January when the Chair of the USS Board Sir Andrew Cubie used his casting vote to push Defined Contribution onto all members of USS.

Given the complex nature of the issues at stake, we have produced a leaflet to explain:
- why "the deficit" is a projection based on flawed methodology,
- why Defined Contributions are notoriously risky,
- how the pension cut will impact you, and
- what you can to save your pension.

Further guidance to members, including a Q&A section on our USS Pension campaign pages, will follow soon.
