Professor John Long (1935-2025) – a truly amazing legacy

We are saddened to hear of the death of Professor John Long at the age of 89.
Professor Long was Emeritus Professor in UCLIC. He was instrumental in establishing UCLIC, having been Director of its predecessor, the Ergonomics and HCI Unit at UCL. This history is summarised in 'An informal history of ergonomics' by Rachel Benedyk. Following his retirement in 2001, John continued to be an active researcher, publishing three books based on his research at UCL: Toward Engineering Design Principles for HCI; HCI Design Knowledge – Critique, Challenge and a Way Forward; Approaches and Frameworks for HCI Research).
A special Festschrift edition of Interacting with Computers was published in 2010 in honour of John’s contribution to Human Computer Interaction and the science of design more broadly.
Professor Long leaves a truly amazing legacy in terms of insights, outputs and people who conducted their research and teaching under his guidance.
