Manufacturing Futures Lab

The Manufacturing Futures Laboratory (MFL) will support new research focused on knowledge-based manufacturing to deliver the sustainable products and processes of the future.

One of the priorities of our new east London campus is to make the future-proofing of manufacturing a priority.

Within the Manufacturing Futures Laboratory (MFL) at UCL East, we will create an innovative facility to support the development of new strategic research, focused on knowledge-based manufacturing to deliver the sustainable products and processes of the future. 

The MFL will be a multidisciplinary research hub to underpin the end-to-end production of new products in ways that are smarter, faster and more flexible than currently possible. Using technologies such as 3D printing, synthetic biology and intensified processing, our goal is to make both existing and future products cheaper, more effective and sustainable than at present.

Working across the disciplines of Biochemical, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, and Chemistry, the MFL will pioneer taught programmes in sustainable and advanced manufacturing with an emphasis on innovation and enterprise and the wider regulatory environment.

These will leverage other UCL research strengths in ‘big data’ analytics, artificial intelligence, process monitoring and control technologies and multi-scale modelling.

We will deliver a range of nano- and micro-structured products and cost-effective, sustainable process technologies as well as the highly-skilled individuals necessary to implement these technologies in industry. 

Our new facilities will enable us to conduct cross-cutting, multidisciplinary research that will have a deep impact across the chemical, pharmaceutical, energy and electronics sectors to help the UK increase its industrial productivity.
