Engineering at UCL East

East London has long been an industrial heartland and our new campus will give us the opportunity to break new ground with Engineering at UCL East.

Leveraging our unique expertise in this area, and opening it out to an even wider community of students, state-of-the-art facilities will enable experiential learning and hands-on research to be at the heart of the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park development.

Our facilities will be open to industry and the local community as the location for extra-curricular schools activities, training, support for start-up ventures, summer residential courses, and events.

Engineering at UCL East will support like-minded partners in manufacturing and design industries and increase the number of young people studying engineering by supporting developments in primary and secondary education and creating stronger links between vocational and HE routes into engineering.

Key information

UCL faculty: Engineering Sciences
Academic lead: Professor John Mitchell
Building: Marshgate
Focus area: Engineering; design

Building on a philosophy of making and experimentation, group work will be at the centre of our research-based curriculum.

The new Engineering Design programme will foster the next generation of engineering leaders to create innovative and integrated solutions that enable and lead positive change to improve society. Alignment of engineering and design disciplines will propel our graduates to lead change through novel solutions to the world’s toughest challenges.

Specialist equipment will encourage hands-on enquiry, from the fermenters in our microbrewery and the centrifuges of the new Advanced Process Design Laboratories, to Internet of Things technologies in the Engineering Teaching Laboratories.

The spaces will support cross-faculty taught programmes and make up the research laboratory for the Centre of Engineering Education (CEE), home to a team of researchers who will guide, develop and evaluate the effectiveness of our innovative teaching spaces and programmes.

This will provide a critical feedback loop to the engineering education community and position Engineering at UCL East  as the UK hub for a global network of Engineering Education Excellence.

The facilities will enable students to enhance their making and design skills in state-of-the-art laboratories, learning by doing in spaces specifically designed to encourage collaborative problem solving.” – Professor John Mitchell, Professor of Communications Systems Engineering
