The Marshgate building on our UCL East campus has been shortlisted for the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) London Awards 2025, recognising architectural excellence in the capital.
Designed by Stanton Williams, Marshgate is a state-of-the-art academic facility located in London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The building offers eight floors of adaptable teaching, research, and collaboration spaces, fostering interdisciplinary learning across fields such as engineering, robotics, green technologies, and global health. This nomination highlights Marshgate's innovative design and its role in promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

Gavin Henderson, Principal Director, commented on the nomination: "We are delighted that UCL East Marshgate has been shortlisted for the 2025 RIBA London Awards. This is testament to the ambition of the project, which has delivered on UCL's vision for an academic space that is highly sustainable, accessible, open to the public and which promotes innovation by actively breaking down disciplinary silos across the arts, sciences, and technology.”
The RIBA London Awards celebrate outstanding architectural achievements, with winners advancing to compete for the RIBA National Awards and the esteemed RIBA Stirling Prize. The inclusion of Marshgate in this year's shortlist underscores its significance as a landmark educational development in London.
RIBA Regional Director of London, John Nahar, said “There is such a diverse range of work in this year’s selection, from the restoration of some of London's most recognised landmarks, to high quality social housing and innovative live/work solutions. It is clear to see that collectively, they capture and celebrate the city’s diverse cultural identity, contributing to inclusive and sustainable communities”.
The winners will be considered for several RIBA Special Awards, including the RIBA Sustainability Award and RIBA Building of the Year, before being considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award. Key dates for the RIBA Awards 2025 include the announcement of regional award winners in May, followed by the RIBA National Awards winners in July. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize – the UK’s best new building – will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects and announced in September. The prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize ceremony is scheduled for 16 October 2025.
