The impact of the UCL Trellis programme has been recognised as one of it's 21-22 collaborative projects, 'Another Provision' has been awarded a 2024 Marh Award.

The annual Marsh Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of those working in learning, participation and engagement within visual arts contexts in the UK and internationally. It celebrates the work of individuals and groups, who have brought the benefits of engaging in the arts to communities.

'Another Provision', from Trellis 21-22, is a work from the collaborative practice of researcher Dr. Hanna Baumann (UCL Institute for Global Prosperity) and artist Johann Arens. Together, they use public art to highlight the need for increased food justice, imagine concrete alternative models and de-stigmatise public food services.

During the Covid-19 crisis, the food insecurity plaguing communities across the UK came into sharp relief. Through a series of workshops, with the National Food Service London (NFSL), shared meals were accompanied by discussions of the meaning of food to participants and how to reclaim ownership and power over our food.

The voices and findings from these events fed into the making of a mobile art installation, contributed to publications on just urban food systems, supported the work of NFSL through community-engaged learning and raised public awareness of food justice issues and solutions in east London.

Over the course of the Trellis exhibition, 46 people took part in workshops and over 700 visited the work over a 10 day exhibition.

Beyond the Trellis programme, 'Another Provision' has continued to deliver collaborative and socially engaged work and the partnerships have garnered additional funding to support their work. This has seen them grow new partnerships, such as with House of Annetta in Hackney, and embed their learning within Hanna's teaching in the Institute for Global Prosperity. In 2024 'Another Provision' was showcased at an exhibition in Belin co-curated by Hanna Baumann. The exhibition 'Municipal Kitchens' gathered works by international and local artists and collectives that exposed the current state and injustice of food systems, as well as seeking to propose new forms of community-based eating. The artworks were also accompanied by a weekly event programme and free communal meals, transforming the nGbK space (previously a fast food restaurant in a former market hall) into a public kitchen.

Dr. Hanna Baumann and Johann Arens were brought together to create 'Another Provision' by the UCL Trellis programme, which is run by the UCL Cultural and Community Engagement Team. They work to bring together artists, UCL researchers and east London communities to collaborate, create new knowledge, ideas and the potential for change or action.
We're delighted that Hanna and Johann's work with Another Provision has been recognised with a Marsh award. Their collaborative work has continued to bring people together, asking important questions about food justice and dignity within our food systems. Their work is a shining example of why we continue to advocate for public and community engagement across UCL, and confirms our belief that bringing artists, researchers, and local communities together creates something very special. Briony Fleming, Community Engagement Manager
