London Stadium welcome for new students
23 September 2024
The iconic London Stadium, home to London 2012 and Premier League football club West Ham United, is giving a giant Queen Elizabeth Park welcome this week to students studying at UCL and other universities on the Park as the new academic year gets underway.
Displayed across the digital screen that wraps around the former Olympic venue is a massive message welcoming students to the Park, thanks to the London Stadium and London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC).
As the new term kicked off, Prof Paola Lettieri, UCL Vice President Strategy and Pro-Provost UCL East, joined Annamarie McKie, Associate Dean for Campus Experience at our East Bank partner institution London College of Fashion, UAL, to personally welcome a group of students to the Park to see and enjoy the display.
Students’ Union UCL manager for UCL East Balraj Dhingra, who joined in the celebrations, said:
“This is such a lovely welcoming gesture from LLDC and the London Stadium. I’d like to thank them on behalf of all students who are studying or living on the Park. It’s great to be sharing this moment with students and staff from our East Bank partners at UAL’s London College of Fashion too.
“The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is such a big part of the UCL student experience here, offering everything from world class venues to quiet spaces and waterways to relax by after a busy day of lectures or sessions in the lab. We’re also excited to be partnering with all kinds of local organisations and businesses to create a wide variety of social, cultural, volunteering and learning opportunities, making our UCL East campus an even more exciting place to be!”
The high-definition (HD) digital information screen on the London Stadium is the largest in Europe, measuring 82m wide by 12m high.
Many UCL students have been enjoying Welcome Week induction activities in the Stadium itself and nearby Riverside East is the venue for a Welcome Social bringing students from UCL and UAL’s London College of Fashion together as they settle into life on the Park.
Around 10,000 university students are currently studying across six different institutions on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. As well as UCL and UAL, the universities of Loughborough, Staffordshire, Teeside and LMA performing arts have bases across the Park at Here East.
