Composing for the climate: a unique BBC and UCL installation for young people and school groups
10 October 2024
The BBC Young Composer competition and UCL present 'Composing for the Climate', an audio-visual installation on our UCL East campus for 11-18-year-olds focusing on science and creativity, part of a collaboration between UCL and our East Bank partners the BBC.
Running from Monday 11th to Saturday 30th November 2024, the installation showcases six brand new pieces of music written by BBC Young Composer 2023 competition winners. Each takes inspiration from the WWF-funded Biome Health Project, a biodiveristy research initiative led by academics at UCL East's People & Nature Lab.
The installation encourages young people to reflect on the intersection between climate issues and creativity by experiencing live recordings of the pieces performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra for the BBC Proms, presented on a revolutionary IKO 3D audio speaker.
The recordings have been rendered specifically to respond to the audio qualities in the space. The audio experience is accompanied by a short film of the young composers exploring their music and creative process.
Composing for the Climate coincides with the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 and is part of the Gaia Public Programme, which takes inspiration from Luke Jerram’s Gaia globe, a permanent artwork hanging in the atrium of the Marshgate building on our UCL East campus, which reminds us of our place on the planet and our collective need to protect it.
While the installation is aimed at young people aged 11-18, families and adults of all ages are also welcome. Feel free to drop in, no need to book.
