Wheelchair users needed to test new lab coats

16 December 2024

A team of researchers and designers led by UCL is looking for wheelchair users working in wet lab environments to user-test what is believed to be the first-ever prototype of a lab coat adapted for wheelchair users.

The project has been initiated by the UCL Innovation Lab, which is based on our East campus in Stratford, in collaboration with our East Bank partners London College of Fashion, UAL and with support from the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

A wet lab is a laboratory where ‘wet’ hazards including chemicals and biological agents are used to perform experiments.

Participants must be aged 18 or over and use their wheelchair at least part-time in a lab environment and be willing to test the prototype while using their wheelchair. In return, those taking part will be paid £50 for their time and input.

If you are interested, please email ucleast.labcoats@ucl.ac.uk with an expression of interest by 30 January 2025.

If you are selected, we will email you back with more information about the study and invite you to give your consent to participate. This research has received ethical approval under the application ID Number UCLIC_2022_006_Marquardt.

Once the project is complete, UCL will freely licence the designs for non-profit production.

If you would like to know more about the project or have any questions, please email Oliver Collier, UCL Innovation Lab Manager, via ucleast.labcoats@ucl.ac.uk.
