UCL supports Business Awards to recognise community impact in Newham
12 December 2024
UCL East sponsored this year’s Newham Chamber of Commerce Impact and Corporate and Social Responsibility Business Award, for local businesses who are making a positive difference.

Since opening the UCL campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, UCL have been a proud member of the Newham Chamber of Commerce, working to connect with and support local businesses across the borough.
The Chamber hosts their annual Business Awards to celebrate the achievements of local businesses in Newham. These prestigious awards aim to recognize the hard work and contributions of businesses that drive economic growth and prosperity in the area.
This year, UCL had the opportunity to sponsor and judge their Impact and CSR Award, for businesses that have demonstrated outstanding commitment to social responsibility and community impact.
Colleagues from the Pro-Provost Office (UCL East and London) and the UCL East Cultural and Community Engagement Team reviewed the highly competitive category and were particularly impressed with the examples provided by three businesses, who were then shortlisted for the award: Deep Boroughs Network CIC, Union Coffee Roasters and Good Hotel London.
These organisations were able to demonstrate a commitment to sustainable practices, strong community partnerships, and positive societal influence that contributed to both economic and social well-being.
However, after careful review, the panel selected Good Hotel London as their winner. They were impressed by their commitment to supporting Newham residents in developing skills, confidence and careers across the hospitality industry, and providing free space to support tutoring and wider community events such as films and dancing. The panel also noted a strong sense of going above and beyond business as usual and making a truly positive impact on the local community.
Sam Wilkinson, Head of Public Art and Cultural Engagement at UCL East, who sat on the judging panel said:
‘The Awards were a wonderful celebration of the achievements of businesses and their positive contributions to the local area. It was great to read so many inspiring applications and a very enjoyable, but tough, task to judge the Impact and CSR category.
Amy Lightstone, Director of the UCL Pro-Provost (London) Office, who presented the award said:
“Newham is a core partner for UCL and it is with great pride that we have been able to support the Newham Chamber of Commerce Business Awards. We have been hugely impressed by the diverse range of businesses that are thriving in the Borough, and it is a pleasure to support the positive impact they are creating for both the local economy and the community.”
The Newham Chamber of Commerce has over 150 active members and has been in operation for over 55 years. Their annual Business Awards highlight innovation, resilience and community impact across 12 categories including Best New Business, Employer of the Year and Sustainability.
Congratulations to all the Awards nominees, shortlisted businesses and winners!
