UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic: providing free legal advice to east London communities

Stemming from the Faculty of Laws’ own research on the impact of unresolved legal problems, the UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic (UCL iLAC) was set up in 2016

The Clinic, based in Stratford, offers residents free face-to-face legal advice on all aspects of social welfare law with specialist advice in welfare benefits, housing, education and community care.

UCL iLAC is staffed by UCL Laws students working under the supervision of experienced, qualified advisers and solicitors. It delivers a valuable educational experience for law students, whilst providing life-altering legal advice for local people in a borough where free advice services are hugely lacking.

Since its establishment it has seen over 200 Clients and worked with 100 students. Working particularly with people who are experiencing mental and physical health issues, they ensure those who are not usually heard are able to access legal representation.

Researchers at the Clinic have recently completed a pilot study on the impact of legal advice on health to provide an evidence base for further policy and research in the area.
