UCL showcases expertise at Europe's largest commercial cell and gene therapy congress

The UCL Translational Research Office (TRO), joined by UCL Business (UCLB), participated in the Advanced Therapies Congress on 18–19 March at ExCeL London, engaging with industry leaders and showcasing UCL’s pioneering work in Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs).

With one of the world’s largest ATMP commercial pipelines, spanning over 120+ projects from discovery, clinical trials through to market launch, UCL reaffirmed its role as a global leader in cell and gene therapy research. This event was a vital opportunity not only to showcase our work but also to demonstrate how we collaborate with industry, build strategic partnerships, and foster new opportunities in therapeutic innovations.

The event also featured expert contributions from UCL scientists. Dr Pamela Tranter, Head of the Translational Research Group at TRO, delivered a talk on ‘The Challenges of Developing Advanced Therapies in Academia’, shedding light on key hurdles and strategies for translating academic discoveries into real-world impact. Additionally, she joined a panel discussion on the impact of EU and UK relations on the European Advanced Therapies Market, contributing valuable insights on regulatory and commercial landscapes.

We are also pleased to see the preview of the Advanced Therapies: London's Landscape Mini Report by MedCity during the Congress. The report notes that 70% of edited cell therapy trials take place in the Knowledge Quarter, where UCL is a major contributor. UCL also tops life science spin-out frequency. This is a testament to UCL's pivotal role in the UK's advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP) landscape and across London's life sciences sector.

The Advanced Therapies Congress is Europe’s largest commercial cell and gene therapy event, bringing together 3,300 global executives, 300 speakers, and 75 start-ups to discuss the latest breakthroughs and challenges in the field.
