TRO endeavours to support our academics drive change for those living with a rare disease

28 February 2023

Late stage rare disease portfolio. Number of projects (n) and total award amount by disease area

Today (28 February 2023) is Rare Disease Day, and here at UCL and our partner hospitals, we have over 100 clinical academic research groups investigating more than 350 rare diseases. To mark this meaningful day, we are delighted to share with you a snapshot of the Translational Research Office’s (TRO) endeavours to support our academics drive change for those living with a rare disease.

  • We secured a LifeArc Pathfinder award of £500K to support early-stage translational projects looking to diagnose and treat rare diseases.
  • We launched the UCL Therapeutic Acceleration Support (TAS) rare disease call and received 19 applications. Results will be announced soon, and we are ready to support the awardees to advance rare disease research.
  • The late-stage rare disease portfolio managed via the TRO has substantially grown in the past 10 years, spanning a wide range of disease areas and attracting £90m of public funds – see the banner image and below.

We look forward to continuing the effort and working with the research community to move us towards a healthier world.
