Repurposing TIN secures an Entrepreneur in Residence to provide research guidance and coaching

1 February 2022

Introducing Dr Stephen Hobbiger as a Royal Society Entrepreneur in Residence to provide advice and coaching to the UCL Drug Repurposing Community, for academics wishing to take an entrepreneurial route to translating their Repurposing projects.

Steve Hobbiger

The UCL Repurposing Therapeutic Innovation Network (TIN), through the Translational Research Office (TRO), are delighted to welcome Steve as the holder of a prestigious Entrepreneur in Residence award from The Royal Society. The TRO, through their support of Steve in securing this role, hopes to further strengthen the TIN by gaining additional expertise helping UCL academics and clinicians further develop an entrepreneurial mindset for accelerating the translation of Repurposed therapeutics.

Steve is a physician and a former Senior Vice President and Head of Drug Safety and Medical Governance at the Pharmaceutical Company GlaxoSmithKline. He has worked in all phases of clinical trials and is a former Vice President of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine and he has been part of several cross-Industry bodies including the EU Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI).

Steve will use his 30+ years of industry experience to teach, coach and mentor those in the UCL and our partner hospitals repurposing community with great scientific ideas who need support navigating the complexities of Drug Development. Steve has a long-standing and trusted relationship with the TRO and is fully aware of the ambitions and challenges of the Repurposing TIN. As such, he is perfectly positioned to get started right away in sharing knowledge across the Repurposing community towards applying an entrepreneurial mindset to their projects, and aid exploration of alternative ways to reach the clinic through to marketing authorisation.

If you would like to arrange a conversation with Steve to discuss progressing your Repurposing project through an entrepreneurial pathway, or on developing a novel therapeutic, please contact the Repurposing TIN Coordinator, Dr Asha Recino (a.recino@ucl.ac.uk) who can facilitate this.
