Talk outline
"Accessibility" and "diversity" have become key watchwords in the sphere of film exhibition in recent years. This talk will argue that in order for films to become more accessible and reach wider audiences, both the exhibition sector and the subtitling industry need to converge. This talk will consider two facets to this premise: that the film exhibition world needs to embrace greater diversity of films to boost choice for audiences, and in so doing, that subtitles are integral to this - both subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and through language transfer; and that an understanding of audience reception and film as an art form more broadly is intrinsically linked to subtitling practice, enabling moving image culture to be enriched, both for creators and audiences alike.

Sonali Joshi is Founder & Director of London based subtitling company and film organisation Day for Night. She has worked across the film exhibition, distribution and screen translation sectors in the UK, France, Denmark and Asia over the last 20 years. Day for Night's subtitling division handles wide-ranging content for theatrical releases and screenings, home entertainment, digital, gallery installations, performance and text, with a particular focus on independent cinema, experimental cinema and visual arts. Sonali has worked extensively on festivals and curatorial projects, most recently on a BFI supported touring project entitled 'India at 70' in 2017, and as Founder & Curator of Aperture: Asia & Pacific Film Festival in partnership with University of Westminster.
