We’re developing Career Frameworks at UCL
28 August 2019
Following a successful pilot, we’ve been developing more Career Frameworks for job families across professional services to help staff plan their careers.
One of the TOPS Programme aims is to provide more fulfilling careers for professional services staff. To do this we have been working with teams across the university to develop a series of Career Frameworks.
These Career Frameworks provide the key information professional services staff need to plan their careers, their development and their progression.
We are aiming to produce Career Frameworks for all key areas of professional services before April 2020.
A successful pilot: CAM Career Frameworks
At the beginning of the year we launched the CAM UCL Professional Services Career Framework as a pilot. We’ve had some fantastic feedback on the resources so far.
Through surveys we heard that:
- There was a high agreement among CAM staff that the elements of the framework (eg. PDF booklet, website and Ways of Working framework) added value and were useful to them.
- 100% agreed the framework was easy to understand.
- There was 80% agreement around the accuracy of job levels and functions described in the framework.
- 93% agreed that the personal and professional development information included was helpful.
- And 76% agreed that the framework supports staff to have a more fulfilling career at UCL.
Developing more Career Frameworks
Since then we’ve been developing more frameworks for a range of job families.
So far we have mapped out:
- six job families in HR,
- four job families in Student and Registry Services (SRS) which we have expanded to include Education Administration and Student Support (EASS),
- and one family for Project and Programme Management.
- We are also working with a sponsorship group in ISD and the Faculties to map out and define job families for IT.
- And will shortly start work on Career Frameworks for Operational Management, Technicians and Research Support.
To do this we first establish a sponsorship group for each area of job families, with representation from across both central professional services, Faculties and Vice Provost Offices.
We then map out job families, invite members of the community to lead on each and support the job family lead to run workshops.
Together, we build a picture of the reality of what each job looks like at each grade. Rather than reinventing job descriptions, we look at whole job families and what they do. We want to help people understand existing roles, not create new ones.
