We have introduced Unitemps, a new UCL owned and run recruitment service for the placement of temporary workers.
What is the Unitemps project?
Unitemps has been introduced as part of the TOPS programme’s aim to provide more effective services for staff, and greater investment in UCL’s academic mission, through improving value for money in our professional services. Unitemps also ensures that UCL is fully compliant.
Developed in 1997 by the University of Warwick, Unitemps provides a recruitment solution to higher education providers. With 13 UK university partners, Unitemps is a growing network with an ethical approach to recruitment that is bespoke to the higher education sector.
By taking this new approach we are able to:
- offer the UCL community a streamlined recruitment process for hiring temporary and one-off workers, including students, into temporary work at UCL,
- provide substantial support to hiring managers, removing the need to carry out eligibility to work checks and cutting down on administration time,
- generate cost savings of approximately £5 million over 5 years,
- significantly improve temporary candidates’ experience of the hiring process,
- help ensure we are fully compliant when processing temporary worker requests.

Unitemps now part of business as usual
The Unitemps office opened its doors in October 2018 and is managed as part of the HR Division.
Over time, a large proportion of student and non-student workers on temporary or ‘one-off’ contracts will be managed by Unitemps, This will reduce the administrative burden in departments and ensure that UCL’s temporary recruitment process is compliant and efficient. The team can manage as much or as little of the recruitment process for you, as you would like, from advertising vacancies, to shortlisting and interviewing candidates. Temporary workers benefit by having access to an online timesheet system and the sign up process is quick and simple.
