Faculty of Engineering

Meet the current Faculty lead for Engineering Sciences, view current and past projects and interventions.

Dr Sudeshna Basugupta is Associate Professor (Teaching) in Sustainable Resource Management in the Deptartment of Chemical Engineering. She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and contributes to the nurturing of a teaching focused community in UCL. As an assessor, she engages with colleagues from diverse subject areas on discussion related to best teaching practices to stay informed and apply them to her own teaching practices.

Her teaching practices are driven by educational research, with the application of diverse teaching tools and assessment methods, to support an inclusive learning environment for her students who have different academic backgrounds including engineering, geology, management, environmental science, economics and others.

She has been a Student Success Lead since September 2024.

Status

Increase departmental engagement with Student Success Fund and Student Curriculum Partner schemes.

Staff initiatives / Curriculum changes

  • Increase the amount of modules reviewed compared to previous years
  • Inclusive curriculum changes by module leads, after reviewing SCP feedback. Agreed short, medium and long0term changes and outcomes.
  • Positive student experience during the next iteration of the reviewed modules, for students. Share the good practice identified in the reviews, so they can be implimented more widely in the faculty.

2025-26 - Once modules have run for another cycle.

Enhance support for Access students in the faculty for the entire duration of their studies. Engage Access students to monitor their academic progress and gain insights into their overall experiences.

Student belonging

  • Track formally via formal and informal social meets, surveys and data on lived experiences of students.
  • Address and close retention and attainment gaps with necessary support if required.

Ongoing

Liaise with pathfinder department(s) to engage with personal tutors to review, observes and identify points and approaches where departmental academic tutor(s) engagement with student support and wellbeing services team can enhance support.Student belonging

  • Enhance student support to address retention and attainment gaps.

Previous work*

  • Development of project to investigate gaps in personal tutoring provision
  • Development of departmental working groups to lead on design and delivery of the Integrated Engineering Project (IEP).
  • Worked with Centre for Engineering Education to create a more granular dataset via use of tableau and departmental resources
