Current initiatives include our work with the UCL Academy, the creation of a school governors network and a consultative sixth form panel.
We work strategically with schools and colleges, including the UCL Academy, to improve transition from school to university, inform our teaching practices and deliver the best possible learning outcomes for our students.
UCL Academy
We were the first university in the country to be the sole sponsor of an academy – a non-selective mixed state school in our home borough of Camden.
School Governors Network
We are developing a support and training network for the many UCL staff who serve as governors of schools and colleges.

Sixth form panel
We have established a consultative panel of sixth formers from a range of schools across London, to help us scrutinise and improve our policy and practice.

UCL Governor Network
UCL staff who volunteer as school or college governors, or are thinking about doing so, are welcome to join the UCL Governor Network.
The network is a volunteer-led initiative which will provide support and training for the many UCL staff who serve as governors of schools and 6th form colleges, and inspire more staff to take on governor roles.
Aims of the network
Through this network, we aim to:
- support staff through training and opportunities to share best practice in order to enhance their skills as governors and deliver the best outcomes for their school or 6th form college
- advocate for governorship as a voluntary activity, and ensure skills gained through governing are recognised and acknowledged by UCL as enhancing the skills and experience of staff
- link governors to the latest research and ideas from the IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, to enhance their knowledge and confidence to challenge and innovate
- be positive ambassadors for UCL with schools and colleges and ensure governors have information about relevant UCL activities, such as undergraduate open days and IOE short courses, to share with their schools or college.
How the network can support you
If you are a governor, or are interested in becoming one, the network can help you by providing:
- a calendar of knowledge and skills training events to enhance your effectiveness as a governor
- the opportunity to meet and network with other governors at UCL sharing knowledge and experiences
- recognition by UCL of professional development acquired by governors to their work at UCL through the Career Framework
- access to related information from the IOE, the world’s leading destination for education.

Become a school governor
If you are not currently a school or college governor but would be interested in taking on this role, you may wish to contact one or both of the following organisations:
- Inspiring Governance, the national online matchmaking service which connects skilled volunteers interested in serving as governors or trustees with schools and colleges.
- Governors for Schools, an independent charity which recruits volunteers to serve on school governing bodies across England.
Governor vacancies may also be advertised directly by schools and colleges, local councils or academy sponsors.
