New online tool to support students’ academic writing and referencing
25 March 2026
Studiosity, a 24/7 academic writing support service, is available to all current UCL students through Moodle.
What is Studiosity?
Studiosity is a new 24/7 academic writing support service for students at all levels of study. This optional, unlimited-use service will complement the excellent academic support provided by our academic staff, Personal Academic Tutors, and the Academic Communications Centre (ACC).
It is a 20-year-old multi award-winning platform, which has worked in partnership with Universities UK since 2017. UCL joins over 250 universities worldwide that use Studiosity, including the University of Sydney, University of Melbourne, Monash University, University of Exeter, Queen Mary University of London and SOAS University of London.
Studiosity is a pre-trained, domain-specific (closed) AI system, which minimises its environmental impact compared to large language model and ‘un-trained’ AI systems. This also means you can be confident that none of the work uploaded by UCL students will be used to train its AI.
How will our students benefit?
Introducing Studiosity is part of UCL's wider commitment to improving student success, experience, wellbeing and equity across a diverse student body.
Use by students is optional. Studiosity’s feedback focuses on style and structure and is provided as advice: students who use the service can review feedback received and decide whether or not to implement suggested changes.
Studiosity does not replace UCL academic staff feedback and advice. It is intended to enhance our provision of in-person, weekday academic support services, including the Academic Communication Centre, the Academic Writing Centre and Library Services. It does not provide wellbeing support.
What features are available and when?
The services UCL has agreed with Studiosity are:
- Writing Feedback+ – AI review of submitted work (launched in March)
- Connect Live – human support (24/7 written feedback provided in under six hours, (launching later in 2026)
- Study Assist – generic study advice, AI chatbot (launching later in 2026)
Studiosity’s Writing Feedback+ tool is available to all students via Moodle.
Who is overseeing the service?
The Studiosity Implementation Group is overseen by the Digital Education and Student Experience Sub-Committee (DESC). Academic input is via an Academic Advisory Group, also overseen by DESC, co-chaired by Danielle Tran (Deputy Director, HEDS) and Ayanna Prevatt-Goldstein (Head of the ACC), with representatives from faculties, departments and professional service teams from across UCL. Both groups will report on the implementation of Studiosity to DESC, a sub-committee of Education Committee. DESC will also oversee Studiosity’s ongoing impact evaluation.
