Teaching on Wednesday afternoons
13 January 2026
We keep Wednesday afternoons free for taught students to participate in extra-curricular activities and support an exceptional student experience at UCL.
Following feedback raised at the Student Partnership Committee, this is a reminder to colleagues of our 2025-26 policy on Teaching on Wednesday afternoons.
The policy outlines that all teaching should finish at 12.50pm on Wednesdays, so that students can take part in extra-curricular activities.
Your Faculty’s Education Leadership must approve any decision to hold classes on Wednesday afternoons. All affected students must also agree to the decision.
If you have questions about how this relates to your teaching, please contact the Director of Education in your Faculty.
Please find the policy in chapter 14 of the Academic Manual.
About student partnership at UCL
Our Student Partnership Committees (SPCs) are part of our commitment to strengthening the student voice in education at UCL.
Previously known as Staff Student Consultative Committees, the Department SPCs all report into a central Student Partnership Committee. This is made up of senior staff, academic reps, and representatives from the Students’ Union.
SPCs are a crucial part of our work with Students’ Union UCL relating to education and the student experience, including our shared Student Life Strategy.
Ana Boikova, Activities & Engagement Officer, Students’ Union UCL, says:
“It is essential to recognise the significant role extra-curricular activities play in shaping a student’s overall university experience and in developing one’s skills. We have been receiving significant feedback from students that many now have lectures or tutorials on Wednesday afternoons, which has been detrimental to their studies and welfare. I urge all faculties to ensure that they follow the ‘Teaching on Wednesday afternoons’ policy to ensure we are improving the student experience.”
