Reminder about Teaching on Wednesday afternoons policy

25 March 2025

We keep Wednesday afternoons free for students to participate in extra-curricular activities and support a holistic UCL experience.

Following feedback at a Student Partnership Committee (the senior committee for student partnership at UCL) meeting earlier in March, we are reminding colleagues and students of our 2024-25 policy on Teaching on Wednesday afternoons

The policy outlines that all teaching should finish at 12.50pm on Wednesday afternoons, so that students can take part in extra-curricular activities as part of their overall UCL experience.

Any decision to hold classes on Wednesday afternoons must be approved by your Faculty’s Education Leadership and also discussed and agreed with all students involved.

Please see the 2024-25 policy on Teaching on Wednesday afternoons in chapter 14 of the Academic Manual

If you have a question about how this relates to your teaching, please contact the Director of Education in your Faculty.

About Student Partnership at UCL

Our Student Partnership Committees are part of our ongoing commitment to increase the importance of the student voice in education at UCL.

Previously known as Staff Student Consultative Committees, the SPCs all report into a central Student Partnership Committee made up of senior UCL staff members, academic reps, and representatives from the Students’ Union. This approach encourages strong partnership between departments and student representatives.

We are also continuing to collaborate with Students’ Union UCL across other areas of work relating to education and the student experience, including next steps for our shared Student Life Strategy.

Students can find out more about student feedback and how they can make a difference on the You Shape UCL pages

Professor Kathryn Woods, Pro-Vice-Provost (Education - Student Academic Experience) says: “Thank you for your collaboration as we work in partnership with students to make positive improvements and shape their time studying with us.”

Ana Boikova, Activities & Engagement Officer, Students’ Union UCL, says: “It’s essential to recognise the significant role extracurricular activities play in shaping a student's overall university experience. With Wednesday afternoons dedicated to sports, students can engage in these activities without affecting their academic progress. Any decision to hold classes on Wednesday afternoons must be approved by the Faculty Education Leadership and also discussed and agreed with all students involved.”
