On 26 August, eligible students received an email inviting them to tell us if they intend to study remotely in Term 1, by completing a task on Portico. Students intending to study on campus were advised that they did not have to complete this task.

Eligible students were asked to declare their intention to study remotely by 14 September.

To view which students on your programme intend to study remotely:

  • Log in to Portico
  • Select My portico
  • Scroll down the page to Reports section
  • Select ‘Faculties New Student enrolment report’ and or ‘Faculties re-enrolment report’. This can be filtered to your department or Faculty.
  • This will produce a csv file – in column AA “Intending to study remotely” Yes or No.
  • If students select ‘Yes’ they have to confirm their country and timezone that they will be located in.

Key dates

  • By 14 September: Deadline for eligible students to declare their intention to study remotely
  • By 15 October: New students must have enrolled.
  • By 22 October: International students who require a visa and are on programmes without a remote study mitigation must have arrived on campus.
  • By 29 October: Continuing students must have enrolled.

Note: Some programmes have advised their students they must be on campus before the 22 October to fulfil particular study requirements. Students have been advised in central communications to follow that guidance.

If an international student is on a programme where remote study has been agreed, UCL will not be withdrawing their visa sponsorship if they do not arrive on campus by dates outlined above.

Remove ineligible students' data

Colleagues should note that enrolment reports may include students who incorrectly completed the Portico task and are ineligible for remote study.

The task instructions state that it should only be completed by students on eligible programmes who are domiciled overseas,. However, a small number of home students and international students on programmes without a remote study mitigation have incorrectly submitted the form declaring their intention to study remotely.

A central communication will be sent to these students this week, reiterating that they are ineligible for remote study and should expect to arrive on campus for the start of term.

Students who are Clinically Extremely Vulnerable (CEV) or otherwise concerned about their health when travelling to UCL will be reminded that they can contact Student Support and Wellbeing, who will consider the adjustments that can be made as part of their SORA.

You can filter out ineligible students by their ‘Home’ status or by removing those programmes where a remote study mitigation has not been offered.

There may be a small number of anomalies where ‘Home’ students are domiciled overseas and are eligible for remote study. Colleagues should be aware of these as such students have been advised to contact their department.

    Students may change their intentions

The ‘Intention to study remotely’ task will remain open in Portico as students may experience a change in circumstances beyond their control, so colleagues should continue to monitor the enrolment reports regularly.

Students who have declared their intention to study remotely have been advised that they can change their preference and arrive in London at any point during Term 1. They are asked to update their preference in Portico and let their department know about their change of plans as soon as possible.
