Five ways you can promote the Laidlaw Scholarship opportunity to your students

12 January 2022

First year undergraduate students are invited to apply for a funded opportunity to work with a leading academic and have a real-world impact while developing their research and leadership skills.

Laidlaw Scholarship 2021

The Laidlaw Undergraduate Research and Leadership Scholarship programme aims to develop a new generation of leaders who are skilled researchers, embrace data-based decision making, and believe it is a moral imperative to lead with integrity.

It invests in talented and motivated first year undergraduate students – giving you the knowledge, skills and experience to become active global citizens and future leaders in your chosen field.

First year undergraduate students are invited to apply to undertake a summer research project whilst taking part in Leadership development training and a Leadership-in-Action experience.

Applications close on 1 February 2022.

Staff play a key role in encouraging students to apply

Staff can help spread the word by taking the following steps:

1. Encourage them to attend an information event

Signpost your 1st year undergraduate students to watch a recording of our online presentation and Q&A session, held on Thursday 13 January, 1pm. The Programme Manager and UCL Laidlaw Society students gave an introduction to the programme and answered students' questions ahead of the application closing date.

2. Use promotional material to help spread the word

Help spread the word by sharing the advertisement with your first year UG students.

You can also download our promotional pack, which includes posters, and social media posts and images to raise awareness of the programme and its benefits. These materials could be used in Moodle posts to your students or as items for departmental newsletters or Twitter accounts.

3. Share research project examples

With 37 topics on offer this year, you are sure to find something of interest to students in your discipline. Projects are available from across all faculties, led by supervisors working at the forefront of their disciplines.

See the full list of UCL projects

Students can also propose their own project.

You can also help students to get a sense of the experience by sharing case studies of past projects.

4. Encourage your students to follow the Laidlaw Society to hear from past scholars

The Laidlaw Society is a student-led initiative for Laidlaw Scholars at University College London. They aim to create a community of scholars, encourage networking and promote knowledge exchange. The Society welcomes students to follow their Instagram or Facebook accounts, or email them at laidlawsociety.ucl@gmail.com. Students interested in knowing more about the programme can put all their questions to past scholars and get to know peers with similar interests in research and leadership.

5. Discuss with your tutees

Personal tutors could consider highlighting the scheme to first year undergraduate tutees in their one-to-one discussions, and encouraging interested students to apply. The Laidlaw programme is a fantastic opportunity to:

  • contribute to research with a real-world impact;
  • develop leadership skills;
  • put leadership knowledge into practice in an immersive Leadership-in-Action experience;
  • connect with extraordinary peers in world-leading universities; and
  • get a bursary!
