As part of the 2024/25 Education community events offering, we will be running two half-day open space events for UCL staff in advance of the UKAT conference.
The open space events will provide a UCL focused space to discuss and support personal tutoring as well as raise awareness of the UKAT conference and provide information about obtaining professional recognition for personal tutoring through UKAT.
You can come along to one or both events. They will have the same format but will vary in discussion, topics and outputs.
Open Space Personal Tutoring Event Day 1: Wednesday 27 November
- 12-1pm: Lunch and networking
- 1-4pm: Open space event
Open Space Personal Tutoring Event Day 1: Wednesday 4 December
- 10am-1pm: Open space event
- 1-2pm: Lunch and networking
We know from our students what a difference that positive experiences of personal academic tutoring can make, helping them succeed at university and beyond. It also helps create community and belonging. This is something that should be celebrated, which is exactly what we invite you to come and do with us at the annual UKAT conference and open space events that will explore the role of personal tutoring in 'learning well'. - Dr Kathryn Woods joins us as Pro-Vice-Provost Education (Student Academic Engagement).
Who is this event for?
All UCL colleagues who are involved in personal tutoring, advising, and student support roles.
What to expect
These will be Open Space events that will provide an opportunity to turn ideas into action(s).
There will be no formal agenda to allow for conversations and discussions to be driven by you, around a central theme of personal tutoring and student support at UCL. You should:
- encourage colleagues across the institution to share good practice and consider submitting an abstract/proposal to the UKAT conference
- use the event as an opportunity for peer review of abstract ideas (pre-submission to UKAT)
- learn about UKAT professional recognition for staff involved in personal tutoring, mentoring and advising.
After we introduce the event and topics, you will be invited to break out into small groups to discuss the topics and brainstorm what your planned output might be (for example, a case study, abstract for UKAT, or new resource to support personal tutoring and advising at UCL).
Once your group has decided its focus, you can choose to remain in that group or move to another at any time during the event to allow you to participate how and where you like.
In addition to these community-led groups, we will have two fixed groups:
- One focused on UKAT conference abstracts where UCL colleagues who have previously presented will share insights and facilitate peer review discussions.
- One to learn more about UKAT professional recognition for staff involved in personal tutoring and student support roles – current UKAT recognised UCL staff will share their insights and approaches.
