What is SoTL and how do I get started? 5 March [in person]
05 March 2026, 3:00 pm–4:30 pm
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) offers a way to reflect on and transform teaching and learning practices” (AdvanceHE, 2016), but it can be difficult to get started, especially for people who are experts in their disciplines but have never studied social science or education specifically. With this workshop delivered by UCL Arena, we want to promote the idea, however, that SoTL should be accessible for everyone who has learning and teaching as part of their role, whether that be within an academic or professional service context.
This event is free.

This workshop introduces the history of SoTL and some of its core ideas. It asks participants to consider these in light of their work at UCL: what are some ways in which you would like to explore learning and teaching? What would you like to do differently? How can you contribute to the ongoing discussions about how to enhance the student experience at UCL and, more widely, the HE sector? Finally, it looks at how you can share your ideas more widely in a variety of formats, from more traditional peer-reviewed journals to case studies and podcasts.
In this workshop we will:
- Provide a brief history of SoTL
- Explore considerations for engaging with SoTL
- Facilitate space for shared reflections and group discussion
- Share practical strategies for evaluating teaching practices
Intended Learning Outcomes
- Plan how to engage with SoTL
- Evaluate whether ethics approval is needed and submit that if needed
- Choose which format suits the SoTL project in questions
