Supervising Undergraduate and Master’s Projects and Dissertations, 2 Dec 2026 [in-person]

Designed for colleagues who are new to supervising undergraduate and Master's research projects and dissertations, this interactive workshop, offered by HEDS (Arena), explores the foundations of effective supervision. Through discussion, reflection and practical activities, participants will consider strategies for building productive supervisory relationships and supporting students throughout the research process. This workshop is similar to the ‘Supervising Master’s Projects and Dissertations’ workshop offered in previous years.

In this workshop we will:
- Explore the role and responsibilities of supervising undergraduate and Master's research projects
- Develop strategies for building effective supervisory relationships and setting clear expectations
- Consider practical approaches to planning projects, monitoring progress and providing feedback
- Explore how to balance supervisory guidance with student independence and ownership of their project"
On the successful completion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Confidently conduct effective initial supervisory meetings by establishing expectations, clarifying roles and agreeing ways of working.
- Support student progress through strategies for planning, monitoring, feedback and fostering student independence during research projects.
