Aim of the session:
The aim of the workshop is to increase awareness of pedagogic developments in teaching students with English as an additional language (EAL), and to present relevant strategies and skills for use in teaching. The workshop is led by lecturers Kirsty King and Pete Puxon from the Academic Communication Centre, with intercultural expertise and experience in facilitating the learning of EAL students. We combine research and practical experience to explore ways of enhancing communication and engagement with the learning environment, with a focus on how to:
• Increase students' comprehension of lectures and encourage interaction.
• Consider issues that students with English as an additional language may face in their engagement with lectures, lecture material and working in groups.
• Transform the cross-cultural communicative setting to develop a more inclusive learning environment.
This is a 90-minute workshop with no preparation needed. There will be opportunity to share and learn from experiences of good practice.
