This workshop, offered by UCL Arena, builds on the ‘Introduction to Personal Tutoring’ workshop. Whilst the introductory workshop covers the fundamental skills and understanding of the role, in this workshop we will delve deeper into enhancing these skills and consider strategies for addressing complex challenges. In addition, we will explore how to use a coaching approach in your role as a personal tutor.

It is highly recommended that participants attend the ‘Introduction to Personal Tutoring’ workshop prior to attending the ‘Developing as a Personal Tutor’ workshop.

Participants may wish to review sections 4 to 7 of the online course before attending this workshop.

In this workshop we will:

  • explore effective personal tutoring skills for managing challenging situations
  • consider what students value in a personal tutor
  • reflect on your own approach to personal tutoring and identify opportunities for growth
  • discuss how to incorporate a coaching approach into personal tutoring

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • identify the skills of an effective personal tutor
  • develop a personalised plan to strengthen their personal tutoring skills
  • recognise possible ways to manage challenges faced by personal tutors
  • begin to integrate a coaching approach in their interactions with students
