COVID-19 means that student researchers who conduct face-to-face fieldwork (interviews, focus groups, participant observation, ethnographies etc) are now faced with the challenge of learning new methods,so that they can continue or start their research, or turning fieldwork that was initially planned as using face-to-face methods into something else.

At the same time, those of us who teach research methods and skills courses are also faced with moving what is often a challenging teaching area online and ourselves faced with potentially upskilling in new remote fieldwork methods.   

This short session will provide a discursive and problem-driven space to identify ideas for remote fieldwork in different guises.

It provides practical tips, and signposts to resources, on how to develop remote approaches to fieldwork, including:

  • alternative data collection and analysis
  • research methods from other disciplines
  • digital collaboration
  • Project ethics

We will also take a practical approach to identify key tools for teaching research methods online, including remote fieldwork methods.
