The Connected Curriculum is designed to be a flexible framework for curriculum design.
It aims to inspire programme teams to connect across years of study, between staff and students, and between disciplines.
What’s important is there is no single definition of research.
Research has different meaning and significance in every discipline. For some, connected curriculum principles are already part of their day-to-day education and have a natural fit, for others they will offer an innovative way of reviewing their activities. Subject-specific adaptation is therefore essential.
While it is unlikely that a single module can encapsulate all the dimensions and criteria, the key is to consider a whole programme over the course of the student’s time at UCL.
Where to start
Ask the following questions in a development meeting with colleagues and students
- What is research in our subject(s)? What principles, practices and values underpin our research?
- In what ways, and when, are our students already engaging in forms of enquiry and/or their own investigative research?
- Are students encountering specific questions addressed by researchers and learning to articulate their own research questions, at every level of study?
- Can we adjust our teaching methods, student assessments and other aspects of departmental practice to prioritise engaging all students actively in research and critical enquiry?
- Are students developing their digital capabilities to be able to thrive in new working and learning environments?
- Will students get a clear and deliberate sense that anyone can succeed in their chosen field regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, physical or other status?
