Professor Kathleen Armour

On behalf of the Provost, I lead on education and the student experience at UCL. I took up this post in January 2022 before which I was Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at the University of Birmingham, with oversight of all aspects of undergraduate and postgraduate education.
I have extensive experience of leadership and research in education and professional learning. I have previously held posts at Brunel and Loughborough Universities, joining Birmingham in 2010. I was Head of the newly created School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences in 2012, before being appointed to Pro-Vice-Provost in 2016.
My educational qualifications include an MA in Education at the Institute of Education, now part of UCL.
My assistant is Jodi Feakes.

I am Professor (Teaching) in Economics and Director of CTaLE. As Pro-Vice Provost, I work alongside Professor Kathleen Armour to support faculties and departments to address issues arising from their student outcome and satisfaction data, with a particular focus on Assessment & Feedback and Teaching Quality. This also involves academic oversight of internal and external UG and PGT surveys, as well as national benchmarking exercises like the TEF.
My areas of active research include:
- Addressing ethnic and other gaps in higher education access and academic outcomes
- The use of learning technology to enhance the student experience in large cohorts
- Collaborative teaching and learning models

I work with the senior education team on all aspects of education and the student experience. My particular areas of focus are personal tutoring, partnership with UCL Students' Union, student voice, student engagement, and student life and wellbeing.
I have a PhD in History from the University of Edinburgh. My current research explores the history of student voice in UK higher education.

I lead on quality and standards as well as on Degree Apprenticeships. I work closely with colleagues in Education Services on implementing a risk-based approach to quality assurance.

I am the Director of the UCL Higher Education Development and Support (HEDS) Institute, which encompasses UCL Careers and UCL Arena Centre (Education Practice & Development).
The UCL HEDS Institute has been established to provide expertise in staff, curriculum and programme development and to support excellence in students’ holistic education experience and graduate outcomes. In addition to faculties and staff, the HEDS team works closely with both students as co-creators in this endeavour as well as employers to enable labour market-informed education and co-curricular employability activity for students (at all levels) and recent graduates.

I am responsible for the delivery of UCL’s central operational services for student administration. I lead a team of senior colleagues in SRS who contribute to UCL’s ambitions to provide an outstanding and compliant educational experience for our students and staff. Together, we support many strategic activities of the Senior Education Team, often in tandem with SRS Education Services.
As a business change catalyst, I sponsor a range of student-focussed transformations through my membership of portfolio leadership groups (both Student Lifecycle and Education). My approach and delivery are informed by my experience in programme governance, data quality, business consolidation and sustainable digital working practices.
I have a broad and extensive background of leading data-driven institutional change in Higher Education. Before starting at UCL in June 2023, I worked in Admissions, Academic Registry, and IT Services at the University of St Andrews.

Prior to this role, I led Student Engagement at UCL and I now use my knowledge of this area to ensure student perspectives informs the approach to our education priorities. This includes using the rich student data and insights to develop reports, shape recommendations and influence decision-making.

Joanne Stroud
Interim Director of Digital Education

I am the Interim Director of Digital Education, based in the Information Services Division (ISD), and work with the Senior Education Team to ensure our digital services and infrastructure support UCL’s educational ambitions.
Digital Education delivers a range of platforms, tools, training, and guidance to support staff in development of blended and online learning experiences, media capture and production, and digital assessments. We also offer digital skills training for students and staff, promote inclusive and accessible digital practices, and explore the rapidly changing AI landscape from an educational perspective.
I am the ISD lead for the Education Change Portfolio which oversees institutional investment in education-related digital technology and change, and runs a set of agile product teams to develop and enhance our education platforms.
