Lecture Synopsis:

Vitamin D - 'the sunshine vitamin' - was used to treat tuberculosis in the pre-antibiotic era. Until recently, its mechanisms of action were poorly understood. In this lecture I will tell the story of how the effects of vitamin D on the immune system were unravelled, and describe future directions for research into the broader effects of vitamin D on human health.
