UCL Centre for Systems Engineering

Frequently asked questions

We have answered some common questions you may have about studying at UCLse.

Can I study part time?

Yes. We offer our MSc programme in both a part time mode and a modular flexible mode.

What is the difference between part time and modular flexible?

In a nutshell, part time study has to be completed within two years. It has a more structured programme for the student to follow.

Modular flexible has to be completed within five years, and gives the student more opportunity to work out a pattern of study that suits their needs and life style. It tends to be more suitable for those in full time employment whilst undertaking the MSc.

UK part time students may be eligible to apply for student loans.

We have provided some more information about studying part time/modular flexibly on the programme pages.

Can I get a student loan?

Full time and part time UK based students may be eligible to apply for student loans, but modular flexible students are not.

You can find more information on the UCL funding page.

What is the cost of living like in London?  What is the accommodation like?

London can be an expensive city to live in, but with a little searching you can find deals to suit every budget.  Self-catered accommodation may be cheaper, but some students prefer catered halls to take away the stress of planning meals and shopping.  Please do look at the postgraduate page of the accommodation service website for more information about UCL accommodation.

Is there help available for disabled students?

Yes, certainly. UCL offers a range of support services for students with disabilities

Where will classes be held?

Our teaching usually takes place in Central London in Bloomsbury.

What are the term dates?

Term begins at the end of September. Further details can be found on the UCL Term Dates page. Please note the term date exceptions for Postgraduate study, and that reading weeks are also not applicable to our programmes.

How do I know if UCL has received my application?

Applicants are able to check the status of their application through the Applicant Portal on Portico.

I am going to take an English language test later in the year. Can I still apply now?

You may apply now for a place on a programme without a current English test provided you send your qualification as soon as you receive it.  If you are offered a place, it will be conditional on your providing evidence of English before the start of the course.

I have received an offer - what do I do now?

Check out the UCL Graduate Offer Holder page for guidance on what to do before term starts.

The course starts in September. Can I start at a different time?

Unfortunately no. Our taught degrees begin in September; it is not possible to start at a different time.

Can I study by distance learning?

Our MSc Programmes are not designed for distance learning. However, our ‘modular flexible’ option of study means that many of our students are able to fit learning into their lives. We also offer a range of online short courses that can be studied by distance learning.

What will it cost?

Fees vary depending on the degree sought, and whether enrolment is part-time, modular flexible or full-time, and whether the applicant is from the UK//EU or overseas. You can find information on the UCL main page for fees

Modular flexible fees will be based on the number of credits you take per year.

Part time fees are charged per year of study.
