UCL Education for Sustainable Development Steering Group

The UCL Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Steering Group oversees sustainable literacy across formal and informal curricula, with termly progress reviews.

Commitment

Clarify UCL’s commitment in the Sustainability Strategy: “Every student will have the opportunity to study and be involved in sustainability.”

Developed the UCL ESD Plan to fulfil this commitment.
Curriculum MappingEstablish a baseline and monitoring protocol to assess coverage and identify gaps.

SDG AI tool developed to track inclusion of the UN SDGs across taught modules. UCL Sustainability Annual Report monitors progress

Curriculum DevelopmentWork with faculties and departments to create sustainability programmes and/or a sustainability-wide module.

Two for-credit interdisciplinary modules in development. Faculty activity mapped and published on the ESD Network Resource Hub.

Staff Support & ResourcesProvide toolkits, case studies, training, events, and conferences to embed sustainability in teaching.ESD resources created and shared. ESD Network launched.
Co-Curricular EngagementStrengthen sustainability in co-curricular activities through signposting and programme development.

Student Sustainability Hub launched for clearer signposting of opportunities.

Steering Group members

The Steering Group is chaired by Prof Tristan McCowan and members include academic and professional staff and students representatives. The group reports to UCL’s Sustainable Development Goals Board and Sustainability Committee on a quarterly basis.
