Moving out of halls? Donate your unwanted items and help future students

23 May 2025

UCL Accommodation have expanded on last year's successful trial to launch a check-out donation scheme. Before you move out, donate your unwanted items and help future students move in.

Each year, a significant amount of waste is generated during move-out – whether that is fresh food, furniture, books or clothes.

In 2023, during the check-out weekend alone, we collected an extra 15 tonnes of recycling, 20 tonnes of general waste and 3 tonnes of food on top of the normal monthly waste collections. Combined, that’s the weight of 20 cars or more than 12 times the weight of all 54,250 tennis balls that are used at Wimbledon each summer!

With your help, we can turn this challenge into an opportunity for positive change.

Here's what you can do with your unwanted items:

1. Donate it

We want your move-out experience to be simple and sustainable.

From Tuesday, 27 May until Friday, 20 June, hand in your unwanted items to staff at your hall’s reception, and it will be reused by future students or donated to charity.

It's a simple act that makes a difference for others, and saves you from unexpected check-out fees.
