A myth persists in much of the climate community: that if we just do more science, or better science, or scarier science, climate action will follow. Yet despite decades of physical science that ever more clearly paints the risks we face if we do not act, the gap between what we know and what we do has not closed in proportion to the evidence. I argue that’s because how we decide and why we act depends not as much on the physical sciences as they do on the social and political science of how humans interact with information and make decisions.
The talk will be given by atmospheric scientist Professor Katharine Hayhoe. She is a Horn Distinguished Professor and Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Public Law at Texas Tech University, and Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy.
After her talk, Katharine Hayhoe will be in a Q&A with Dr Simon Chin-Yee, Lecturer in the Department of Political Science.
This event is supported by the UCL Grand Challenge of the Climate Crisis.
