Sustainable UCL invites you to join 28 Days of Sustainability! These four weeks will be jam-packed with sustainability-themed events, workshops and activities from all across the university.

As springtime approaches, you are invited to join Sustainable UCL in taking your first climate action step during 28 Days of Sustainability 2022 - a four-week, community-led climate action programme to make #ChangePossible - running from 21st February to 20th March.

From a Climate AI Hack competition, a sustainability fair and a clothes swap shop to Fairtrade pancakes and podcast episodes on fairer climate finance and fast fashion, there is something for everyone to get involved in.

We are stronger when we come together. Step by step, bigger changes and impact can be made.

Kick off FairTrade Fortnight by visiting the treats table in the Wilkins Refectory highlighting UCL’s FairTrade products, and participate in the FairTrade competition.

CLUBZERO has come to campus. This free returnable cup scheme means that you don’t need to choose between waste and convenience – you borrow a cup and simply drop it in one of the return points on campus when you’re done.

Action: Join the 'Pedagogy of Chocolate' webinar

In this webinar, Bob Manteaw will explore the use of chocolate as a teaching and learning resource in global learning and sustainability education.

This seminar is being held to coincide with the Fairtrade Foundation's 'Choose the World you Want' festival, held to mark the annual Fairtrade Fortnight (21 Feb - 6 Mar) - 2 weeks of activity around social, economic and environmental justice. This connection reflects a continuing relationship between the foundation and DERC which has resulted in a report and a seminar that looked at the work of the Foundation in UK schools.

Action: Join the panel discussion 'Scaling up climate finance: How the public and private sectors can work together'

Following COP26 and the Glasgow Climate Pact urging wealthy countries to put more money on the table for climate finance, there is more need than ever for developed nations to meet their $100bn commitment to support developing countries to tackle the impacts of climate change. Join the COP26 Universities Network for a discussion event, bringing together a diverse panel of experts to debate how the public and private sectors can work together to scale up the needed finance, ensure countries can access the finance they need, and how we can transparently monitor finance flows.

Community Action: Volunteer with City Harvest

Est. 2014, City Harvest collects nutritious surplus food from manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers, delivering for free to 360+ London charities feeding those facing food poverty. City Harvest rescues food, people, and planet by preventing food waste, providing life-changing support to communities in every London borough through food, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from waste.

The impact of colonisation is still being felt across the world. This legacy has the potential of severly liming our understanding of the diversity of the history of life on Earth, in turn impacting our ability to use the fossil record for establishing historical baselines, and formulating predictions related to current ecological challenges. Community Action: Become a Conservation Volunteer on Hampstead Heath

Join Heath Hands as a conservation volunteer. You will get to explore the different habitats of the Heath on a guided walk with one of Heath Hands expert rangers. You'll then take part in pratical tasks related to nature and wildlife conservation - including habitat management, litter picking and the creation of wildlife homes.

Climate Hack AI is an international student competition between the student communities of 25 of the best universities, including UCL, seeking to make a tangible impact towards the fight against climate change. Working with Open Climate Fix, the goal is to assist in building the world's best near-term forecasting system for solar electricity generation.

Action: Contribute to UCL's Plastics Reduction Database

Every year, 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean and 80% of that is single-use. UCL is committed to becoming a single-use plastic free campus by 2024. To this end, we launched a form to capture all the plastic reduction actions that are happening on campus. This will enable us to track our progress towards our goal of becoming single-use plastic free by 2024, and will guide institutional level actions in areas that can have the biggest impact.

Community Action: Join the Think & Do Sustainability Scavenger Hunt

Over the course of 3 days you will be sent tasks related to sustainability initiatives at UCL. The tasks include taking pictures near and with sustainability locations at UCL as well as fun and exciting sustainability themed activities - all of which will win you points. 

The game runs from 15 - 18 March. 

You should play in a team of 3-5 people. You can register as an individual and will then be allocated a team.

Action: Attend the webinar 'Behind the scenes of the Eurasian Climate Brief Podcast'

Natalie Sauer, a SSEES MA student and environmental journalist and her two co-hosts, Angelina Davydova (based in St Petersburg) and Boris Schneider (based in Berlin), will give a live Zoom talk about The Euroasian Climate Brief, a new podcast dedicated to climate news in the region stretching from Eastern Europe and Russia down to the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Many councils across the UK have declared a climate emergency and adopted a strategy to achieve Net Zero. To help them achieve this, the Climate Action Unit, the Local Government Association and UCL Public Policy are supporting university-council partnerships to develop solutions to local Net Zero challenges.
